Obituary for Ronna Marie Farnandis

Ronna Marie Fernandis, the only daughter of the late William H. Granderson and Ella M. Granderson was born on January 19, 1957 in Chicago, IL.

Ronna attended Chicago public schools during her elementary year. She then attended Dunbar Vocation High School. It was during this time she pursued her passion for cosmetology. While in school she gave birth to her first child and only son Warren. Even with a child, Ronna still managed to graduate in only 3 years.

After graduation, Ronna met and fell in love with Gregory Saunders. In the spring of 1975 they married and later gave birth to her last child and only daughter, Arhonda Chanae.

Ronna pursued several endeavors during the following years to provide for her family. She then saw an opportunity to have a stable career with The Cook County Sheriffs Department of Corrections. She graduated the academy and became a Sheriff’s Deputy in August 1980. She worked for many years in Division II and in 2004 transferred back to the Division 5 legal office. At her time of retirement, she had served Cook County for 30 years.

On Ronna’s graduation day from the academy, she decided to go out and celebrate. It was on this night she met her soulmate, Ben Farnandis, who just so happened to be singing at McClendon’s, a small club on Chicago’s Southside.

After being staples in each other’s lives for 25 years, they decided to make it official. On June 17, 2005 they married in Mexico. Ben stayed by Ronna’s side through everything. They enjoyed family and life together until the very end.

Ronna was born with a gift! She had a dong in her heart and she loved to sing. Her mother, Ella, left her family church and joined Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church. It was here that Ronna found the Lord.

Christian Tabernacle was Ronna’s second home. She was baptized here, married here and spent her life in service and in song. Ronna loved being a member of the Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir. She remained in that choir until she could no longer physically attend.

It should be recognized that Ronna was always in pursuit of personal growth. She was a lover of books and an avid reader. She was a perfectionist when it came to grammar and words. If you listened to her speak, you instantly knew!

She obtained her real estate license and she began learning to SCUBA dive even though she didn’t start off being a strong swimmer. To add to this list, Ronna was a breast cancer survivor. She took everything head on with her faith.

Ronna was also instrumental in the development of the Sandra Street Scholarship Fund. A scholarship that provides graduating high school youth from the church an opportunity to continue their education.

Ronna was devoted to her family, friends, and church. She remained fun-loving, silly even to the point where you couldn’t help but to laugh and smile when you were around her. She will be more than missed!

Ronna leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Ben Farnandis, one son Warren Saunders, one daughter Dr. Arhonda Johnson, one step-daughter Teniya Farnandis (Chandler), one step-son Michael Howard (Star), one granddaughter Kennedy Hill, one uncle John Walker (Mary) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends and here Christian Tabernacle family. Amen.
